Though it’s only 3.3 square miles, this little island is a mecca of tasty restaurants, great shops, and amazing beaches… So it really is a must-do and something you should definitely add to your list of fun things to do in Charleston, South Carolina.
Whether you’re looking to chill out by the water or dine with some of the best views around, Sullivan’s Island has got you covered. This is a great choice of things to do in Charleston, especially for people who love the outdoors.

The Aiken-Rhett House Museum

Charleston City Market
Next up on my list of things to do in Charleston, it’s Charleston City Market. Though locals don’t tend to frequent Charleston City Market, it’s a great place for tourists that want to get a glimpse into the Old South. It’s often referred to as the “Slave Market”, as it was here that slaves would be sent to purchase food for the plantation.
However, these days this market buzzes with local vendors selling all kinds of fabulous arts and crafts! This is such a great choice for things to do in Charleston for art lovers!

Fort Sumter National Monument
Next on my list of things to do in Charleston, South Carolina, it’s the Fort Sumter National Monument. If you’re a Civil War history buff, then you may already be aware that Fort Sumter is where the first shot of the Civil War was fired back in 1861.
However, even if you don’t have a vested interest in the Civil War, the Fort Sumter National Monument is one of the most popular places to visit in Charleston due to its historical and cultural significance to the South.
Still housing several Civil-War era cannons, this is THE place to visit if you wish to be further enlightened on military history. If you love history, this is a great option for things to do in Charleston.

Things to do in Charleston: The Charleston Museum
This fabulous museum is next on my list of things to do in Charleston. It was founded in 1773 and is said to be the country’s first museum. With a gallery fully devoted to natural history as well as some excellent civil war exhibitions, The Charleston Museum is a fantastic place to visit for families with curious kids.
Though it’s not enormous, it’s packed with enough to keep you occupied for a few hours! This is a great choice for things to do in Charleston.
Husk Eatery
Home to some of the South’s best cooking, Husk is one of the most popular restaurants in Charleston (and for good reason!).
Whether you’re after some crispy catfish or delicious fried chicken, you’ll find that Southern cuisine is truly elevated here and it’s must-do for our list of things to do in Charleston, South Carolina.
South Carolina Aquarium
One of the best things to do in Charleston if you’re travelling with little ones is to pay a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. Packed with an amazing spread of marine life, the South Carolina Aquarium does an excellent job of educating the public on the diversity of the ocean and its inhabitants.
Be sure to check out the conservation exhibits here, as they’re a great way to educate kids about the importance of protecting our oceans. This is a really interesting option for things to do in Charleston, and great for kids too!

Charleston Tea Plantation
One of the most important things to do in Charleston if you’re visiting from outside of the city is to pay a visit to the Charleston Tea Plantation. What was once a potato farm back in the day has now become of the top tea production areas in the world!
Tours here are available every day, so be sure to have a proper look around and appreciate all the hard work that goes into a single brew.
Middleton Place
Next on my list of things to do in Charleston, it’s Middleton Place. Another excellent plantation to visit in Charleston is Middleton Place. This plantation aims to educate visitors on how those at Middleton Place lived, including the slaves that once occupied the area.
If you’re looking to gain historical awareness, we highly recommend checking this place out. Though admission here isn’t free (it’s currently $29 for adults and $10 for children), it certainly offers more than enough to justify the cost, and it’s such an important part of educating on the country’s history.

Darling Oyster Bar
How could I write a list of things to do in Charleston and not mention Oysters? If you’re a seafood lover, then be sure to head down to one of the best seafood restaurants in Charleston. Located on stunning King Street, Darling Oyster Bar has a great menu that’s sure to please even the fussiest eaters.
Though these guys only open for lunch and dinner, you’re sure to find more than enough on this menu to tide you over. Fancy – but a great option for things to do in Charleston, South Carolina.

Magnolia Cemetery
Next on my list of things to do in Charleston – it’s Magnolia Cemetary. First constructed in 1850, this cemetery is one of Charleston’s oldest. If you’re interested in Civil War history, then be sure to check out the area where numerous Confederate soldiers were laid to rest.
This cemetery has a very mellow vibe to it, so we recommend setting aside a couple of hours with which to explore; you may just find yourself pondering the meaning of life amongst the tranquil silence.

Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain
The next option for things to do in Charleston, it’s the Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain. This gorgeous fountain on the waterfront is a prime photo opportunity you won’t want to miss! It’s so scenic and a perfect place to sip a coffee and people watch. If you love a moment of quiet and reflection, I think you’ll love this choice for things to do in Charleston.

Calhoun Mansion
Calhoun Mansion is an extremely impressive 35-room mansion that’s one of the largest personal residences in the city. One of the best things to do in Charleston for those that appreciate some truly amazing architecture, a visit to this influential mansion is unlikely to disappoint.
Open daily from 11am to 5pm for visitors, this newly restored mansion is a truly stunning (and jealousy-inducing) spot in the city.
Charleston City Night Market
Charleston City Night Market is next on my list of things to do in Charleston. Though this thing to do in Charleston only runs between April and December, the Charleston Night Market is certainly worth a visit.
Completely free and open to the public, this vibrant night market showcases more than 100 talented artists and craftspeople throughout its period of operation. So, whether you’re after entertainment or some unique crafts, you’ll find them here! If you love shopping, then you’ll love this choice for things to do in Charleston.

Frankie’s Fun Park
Next on my list of things to do in Charleston, South Carolina – it’s Frankie’s Fun Park. Located only a short drive from Charleston is Frankie’s Fun Park. This park is an extremely popular spot for families travelling with children, and you certainly won’t be disappointed with the activities on offer here!
Whether you fancy mini golf or bumper boats, you’ll find plenty here that will entice young’uns. This is a great choice for things to do in Charleston, especially for families.
Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry
Another great choice for things to do in Charleston for families with children is the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry.
A non-profit organisation which aims to inspire children through the power of play, you’ll find that your little ones are occupied for hours in this wonderful palace of exploration.
Though it’s only suitable for kids under 10, a visit to the Children’s Museum will be remembered as a family day out for years! This is a great option for things to do in Charleston.
Rainbow Row
Next on my list of fun things to do in Charleston, South Carolina – it’s the Rainbow Row. Rainbow Row is an extremely iconic attraction in Charleston, and it’s no wonder why. The row itself is a series of colourful Georgian houses that were lovingly restored in the 1930s.
There are few places in the world in which you can witness such vibrant houses, so we highly recommend packing your camera and taking it all in!

Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park
Another choice of things to do in Charleston for those who love the outdoors… it’s Mount Pleasant Memorial Park. If you’re after a stunning pedestrian area that also happens to offer panoramic views, then we highly recommend paying a visit to the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park.
A great place to head out on a bike ride or extended hike, this is one of the finest places to visit in Charleston for those that love to lead an active life!
Charleston Music Hall
The Charleston Music Hall is one of Charleston’s best entertainment venues and has great historical significance. One of the best things to catch here if you’re able to would be the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.
As many see the area as second only to New Orleans for its jazz, you really can’t go wrong with catching some jazz in the city.
Preservation Society of Charleston
The final thing on our list of things to do in Charleston is a visit to the Preservation Society of Charleston. If you’re seeking an authentic souvenir that you wouldn’t be able to find just anywhere, then this is the place to check out.
Founded and run by one of Charleston’s most famous preservation groups, you’ll find some of the most unique souvenirs around in this charming store.
