Does it snow in Florida? Everything you need to know.

As we’ve mentioned, it’s tricky for anyone to answer the question “does it snow in Florida?” with certainty. Historically, 1989 saw intense snow and low temperatures of 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

We can safely say that those temperatures are quite unusual for the Sunshine State.

Although you might catch cold weather in Florida, it’s extremely rare for it to snow in South Florida. This is mainly because temperatures rarely dip below 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the wintertime.

While this is awesome for those looking to escape from other freezing states, it may disappoint those on the hunt for snow in Florida.

But, there are places in Florida where you can find ‘fake snow’ and we’ll make sure to list them below for you!

Generally, the climate in Florida is incredibly mild, and during the summer months it can be unbearably hot and humid.

Although you will get lower temperatures during the winter, Florida never gets as cold as northern states. Realistically, there’s a reason Florida is so popular among retirees (and the Walt Disney Company!).

The higher average temperatures in Florida make for reliable vacations, and elderly people are less likely to fall ill with unpleasant seasonal illnesses here.

The closest thing to white snow, might be the white sandy beaches!

Like other states, winter in Florida covers the months of December to March. However, the question “does it snow in Florida?” is usually answered with historical dates as opposed to future forecasts.

Seriously, snow in Florida was commonplace prior to the 1900s, but with greater industrialization and climate change, there’s less snow in Florida than there used to be.

We’re not here to give you a history lesson, but 1774 saw mega-snowstorms hit the area. Yep, we’re not kidding!

You’d need a freak weather accident to see that kind of snow again, but there’s always a chance, folks.

Aw, so I won’t see snow in Florida?

You may see snow in Florida if the temperatures really dip, and you’re there for a rare weather change, but we’d say it’s very unlikely.

So don’t pin your hopes on experiencing a snowstorm or blankets of the stuff in Florida, even during winter.

This is because very particular weather conditions are required for it to snow here. Because of Florida’s subtropical climate, you’d need significant cold fronts from the Atlantic Ocean and polar jet streams on your side!

Realistically, you’ve just got to hold out and see whether you get lucky!

Where does it snow in Florida?

Okay – some of these entries may be cheating.

It is possible to spot snow in Florida, but as you’re unlikely to see the real stuff, we thought we’d offer a few amazing faux alternatives.

In fact, many of Florida’s best attractions answer the question “where does it snow in Florida?”.

We get that it’s not quite what you’re after, but it’s certainly a viable alternative to genuine flurries. We promise!

Jacksonville (rare but real!)

It’s difficult to answer the question “where does it snow in Florida?” as snow is so rarely seen in this state. However, Jacksonville can see up to 1.9 inches of snowfall in a single year.

So, if you want to catch some rare flurries, this is by far the best place to try. We will be honest though, you’re much more likely to see sleet than snow here!

If you’d like to make the most of your experience in Jacksonville, then we recommend checking out some of its local attractions.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens are spectacular, and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens are also not to be missed. If you’re a football fan, then we highly recommend trying to catch a Jaguars game while they’re in town.

The atmosphere is always immense, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon in the city.

A more common sight… Jacksonville in the snow!

Snowcat Ridge (man-made snow!)

If you want to see real snow while you’re in Florida, then we highly recommend visiting Snowcat Ridge.

This wonderful spot allows visitors to go tubing, ice skating, and throw as many snowballs as their hearts desire!

Snowcat Ridge is considered an alpine snow park and is perfect for families traveling with kids. If you have the little ones in tow, be sure to bring them to the bunny slope.

Here you can play in the snow together and build snowmen that will make any visitor jealous.

Sure, the snow here doesn’t fall from the sky, but you won’t be able to tell the difference – we promise!
